The years 1928-1932 were a boom period for Bedford and Lawrence County, the limestone capital of the world, despite the Great Depression, which began in 1929 and lasted a decade. Cresthaven Memory Gardens was started in the 1930’s, as part of the Buck farm, with Mr. Buck developing the cemetery with three other businessmen. The limestone industry and the country began to recover in 1940, and Cresthaven was sold to the Geyer family in the 1940’s. Mr. Geyer built the first mausoleum in 1965 to have a place for himself and his family, and this is where he is now entombed.
The Furst Family Mausoleum was built by Mr. Furst out of limestone from his quarry—the Furst’s built the first Limestone Company in Lawrence Co. Mr. Furst built the family mausoleum himself out of limestone.
Cresthaven Funeral Home was built in 1989, and the Geyer’s lived in the other half of the building.
The Meyers then owned Cresthaven for a couple years, selling it to the Loewen Group, during which time, the funeral home was shut down for several years. In 2001, David Shipper purchased the property and re-opened the Funeral Home.
Today, Cresthaven Funeral Home & Memory Gardens is the only cemetery to have a mausoleum –the Chapel of Peace—a Heros garden, as well as both upright and flush memorials. We are a complete package at one location.
